After being the leader of the famed girl group 2NE1, CL has turned her sights set on the U.S. pop market. The is significant in that a former K-pop girl group member and current solo artists, is attempting to take on the task alone.

Moreover, this is also unique as it is not an attempt to infiltrate the market as a K-pop artist as an extension of the Asian market, but as a local artist. In an interview, the multi-talented singer said, “I wanted to take on a new challenge. In fact, it doesn’t matter if I succeed or not. I just want to find a way in.”

As such, CL has been spending most of her time in the United States. When she was in Korea for Taeyang’s wedding early February, she mentioned that she had “been staying in L.A since the end of last year” and that she “has also celebrated New Year’s in the U.S.” Further, she revealed that she has “constantly been working on music in Korea and Los Angeles.”

Additionally, she has worked to expand her network — linking up with other artists, producers, and record managers in the music industry. And it seems to be paying off. CL has started the year on a positive note after signing a contract with Scott Samuel Braun, or as he is known in the industry, “Scooter” Braun.

Braun owns two record labels, one of which, the Raymond-Braun Media Group (RBMG) is a joint venture with R&B singer Usher. Beyond his status as a CEO, he is better known to represent prominent artists Justine Bieber, Ariana Grande, Tori Kelly, The Wanted, and Psy.

Long-Term Success & Loneliness

As the largest music market in the world, CL and her team are aiming for long-term success and access in the United States. “Now I am in the middle of multiple collaboration activities,” CL said, “We enjoy the work and making new acquaintances.”

However, while her dedicated focus on firmly establishing herself in the U.S market has been exciting, it has also been lonely. “Now I feel burdened because I am alone, not with 2NE1,” she said. “I was always with my members, but now I feel lonely […] although we can’t be together anymore, I hope all of the members will be healthy and are doing a great job. I will always support you.”

Meanwhile, CL will perform at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
