DAY6 is proving their growth as a K-pop band with an interview with Metro UK. The publication introduced the group as adding a “dynamic, anthemic dimension” to South Korea’s musical landscape — characterized by polished pop groups, rappers, and R&B singers.

However, the groups did not start off with a bang. After a musically strong debut with “Congratulations” in 2015, the group had modest popularity. What really propelled the group into a position as one of South Korea’s representative rock bands was the ambition project Every DAY6. With the project, the group released one title and B-side track every month, interspersed with concerts and other performances.

Noted by Metro were the two albums produced from Every DAY6, Sunrise and Moonrise, that scored Top 5 positions on one Gaon music chart and appeared in the Top 10 on the US World album chart.

Moreover, as a result of their hard work the band held a multi-day sold-out concert earlier this year. To glean a bit of insight behind the band, their musical style, inspiration, and friendship Metro UK spoke to the group.

Every DAY6 and Growing Popularity

As successful as Every DAY6 turned out to be, the group reveals they were unsure about the project.” Jae, vocalist and guitarist, said they were “Half scared out of our minds, half excited. No one in our company had ever done anything like this before so we questioned if it was even feasible.”

Moreover, throughout the project, the group says that they have not been able to track their popularity. “We’ve been so consumed in the process of meeting deadlines that it’s been hard to monitor our growth,” said Jae. However, while they were not able to track their progress they continued “moving forward by trusting the team members and ourselves,” said Sungjin a vocalist, guitarist, and the leader of the group.

Taking a look back, however, it was not always like this. DAY6 talked about how it takes time to understand and know another person, hinting that there may have been misunderstandings in the past. Now that is different. The drummer of the group Doowoon said, “I think we respect one another, learn the boundaries, and behave carefully.” As a result of their improved relationship, they can work well with each other and produce great music.

Friendship and Being a Band in Korea

With the landscape in South Korea dominated by dance and performance forward groups like EXO, BTS, Wanna One, TWICE, BLACKPINK, it’s hard for bands to prosper. Wonpil, keyboard and vocalist, commented on this but also had a positive perspective. “I think it’s not easy for a band to be successful in Korea. However, we’re slowly knocking on the door and constantly pushing forward,” he said.

More, when asked about other artists and genres that influence their style, including Britpop, classic rock, and pop punk, the group said it was really an allegation. Young K, bass and vocalist, said, “Since we listened to many different genres as we grew up, all those styles are drawn (expressed) on the tracks.”

Meanwhile, DAY6 released their first Japanese song “If ~ I See You Again” on March 14. Check out the song below.
