AOA member Seolhyun explained about the recent controversy where she “unfollowed” a number of celebrities on social network service, Instagram.
On May 20, Seolhyun “unfollowed” a multiple celebrities, including IU, Yoo Ah-In, Yoo Byung-Jae, and SHINee Onew. In addition, she started following f(x)’s Luna. As a result, netizens speculated that the singer was making a point about feminism.
The speculations arose because some of the celebrities Seolhyun unfollowed were involved with anti-feminism controversy. Previously, Yoo Byung-Jae was recently criticized for mocking feminism during his stand-up comedy show, and actor Yoo Ah-In with his “Zucchini” controversy. On the other hand, Seolhyun’s new follower, f(x) Luna recently posted a post about her support for feminism.
On May 28, Seolhyun addressed this issue during AOA‘s comeback showcase. She said, “I always thought I was following too many people. I just happened to unfollow the people I didn’t really have direct connections with, but I immediately stopped after hearing it was causing some problems. Afterwards, I can’t touch it because I’m afraid it will make more issues.”
However, the singer did comment on her growing interest on the social issue that is feminism. Seolhyun said, “I have lots of interest on the social issues and try to listen to lots of people’s opinions. Naturally, I gained lots of interest regarding the feminist movement and feminism itself.”
