At midnight on August 19, YG Entertainment posted a congratulatory poster on its official blog celebrating group BIGBANG’s 12th anniversary. Included on the poster are the world “BIGBANG 12th Anniversary” and “2006.08.19 to 2018” as well as the images of Big Bang jumping against the blue sky. The youthful faces and style of the five members reminds fans of where the group started.
On August 19, 2006, BIGBANG made their debut at YG Family’s 10th-anniversary concert. The five-member team was a milestone for the entertainment label: they were the first teenage group that YG had nurtured. It took a few comebacks for the group to gain mainstream popularity, but once they did, it stayed.
The members’ rap, singing, and performance skills were praised both domestically and internationally.
As such, they quickly became global stars and a standout in the Hallyu wave. In particular, the group gained attention for their stylish, trendy, yet ahead-of-the-curve music that is commonly described as “BIGBANG style.”
Tracks like “Lies,” “Haru Haru,” “Fantastic Baby,” “Loser,” “Bang Bang Bang,” and “FXXK IT” all have a distinct sound, feel, and musicality that is instantly recognizable. Additionally, even with four members currently serving in the military, their 13 music videos continue to gain views. In particular, “Fantastic Baby” and “Bang Bang Bang’ both have over 300 million unique views on YouTube.
One of the reasons why the group has remained relevant for over a decade is due to not only the cohesiveness of the group as a whole but their individuality and talent of each member. G-Dragon and Taeyang’s unit song “Good Boy” has over 200 million views on YouTube. All of the members have released music in some way individually, with the youngest member Seungri making his solo debut this summer.
Although Seungri is set to enter the army by early 2019, the fans’ sendoff of the group points to continued popularity even as they go on a temporary hiatus. Earlier this year, G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung enlisted — following in the footsteps of T.O.P who began his service in 2017.
On the day that Daesung entered the military YG Entertainment released “Flower Road,” BIGBANG’s last group song for the next two years. Even without a music video, the song was incredibly popular, skyrocketing to the top of multiple music charts.
“Flower Road” is meaningful as it is written by G Dragon, the leader, and the eldest member, T.O.P. Through the lyrics, BIGBANG reminisces about their fans over the past 12 and wishes to see them again.
BTOB’s Seo Eun-Kwang expresses his honest thoughts about participating in the last musical before enlisting in the military!
On August 16, BTOB’s Seo Eun-Kwang participated in a press conference for the upcoming musical “Barnum: The Great Showman” – the singer’s last musical before he enlists in the military on August 21.
Because of the sudden military enlistment announcement, Seo Eun-Kwang had to cut off short on his appearance in the musical. The singer explained the situation honestly, “it’s a sensitive topic, so I had already talked to my agency and the musical team beforehand. I guess I could say things didn’t work out while I was applying for a delay in the enlistment. They reinforced the enlistment regulations, leaving me no choice but to enlist.”
He continued, “I will be appearing in a total of 6 performances before enlisting in the military. I am full of regret and sorrow. However, I will put my fullest effort into those performances, and try my best to put on the best show. I thank the musical production team for showing support and consolidation. It will be a performance that leaves no regret whatsoever.”
BIGBANG member Daesung, who joined the army in March, will begin his active military service in his new position.
On June 15, Dispatch reported that Daesung announced his intention to serve as an assistant teacher and was later assigned the position. Further, according to media sources, the singer will continue his service as an instructor for the 27th Division’s boot camp.
“We have assigned Daesung to the position of training assistant for new recruits,” an official from the boot camp confirmed. Moreover, the military officials in charge of assignments chose the singer for the position because of his “good physical strength,” “excellent training scores,” and his “strong will.”
Meanwhile, the Daesung enlisted on March 13 and was the fourth member to begin his military enlistment following members T.O.P., G-Dragon, and Taeyang. His expected discharge date is December 12, 2019.
YG Entertainment released information clarifying BIGBANG Daesung’s health condition.
After reports emerged that Daesung was hospitalized for two days, YG Entertainment explained that the singer had laryngitis. According to Mayo Clinic, laryngitis occurs when the voice box becomes inflamed from overuse, irritation or infection. Additionally, it is very common but easily self-treatable.
From YG, the singer entered a military hospital due to the sickness by has since returned home after being discharged. More, the agency said that “it’s not much to worry about, and the current situation (his health) is improving.”
Meanwhile, Daesung is the fourth member of BIGBANG to enter the military after T.O.P, G-Dragon, and Taeyang.
On another note, the group’s song “Sober,” surpassed 100 million views on may 23. The song was the title track for the group’s third album from the MADE SERIES in 2015. More, Teddy, G-Dragon, and T.O.P combined their talents to write the song. The music video caught the attention of fans for it unique and lively atmosphere, its addictive melody and vivid music.
A picture of BIGBANG member Daesung has been revealed.
On April 20, a photo of Daesung and a friend was posted on a community board. In the picture the singer smiles and with a thumbs-up pose at the training camp graduation ceremony. In particular, he has reassured fans that he completed training without injury.
Meanwhile, Daesung entered training camp in Gangwon Province last month on March 14. Although it has bee a little over a month since he entered the army, he seems to have already settled in. Further, his is expected to finish conscription December 12, 2019.
On another note, BIGBANG released one last group song “Flower Road” in early March.
Last December, BIGBANG had their last concert before some members joined the military. To commemorate the moment, they have decided to release DVD and Blu-ray of the group’s last concert, ‘LAST DANCE.’
On April 17, YG Entertainment announced the sales of DVD and Blu-ray of ‘BIGBANG 2017 CONCERT LAST DANCE IN SEOUL’ on their official SNS and homepage.
‘BIGBANG 2017 CONCERT LAST DANCE IN SEOUL’ took place at the Seoul Gocheok Sky Dome from December 30th to 31st, 2017. It was the group’s last concert before G-Dragon and Taeyang enlisted in military, thus a very meaningful time for both BIGBANG members and VIP’s.
At the moment, G-Dragon had mentioned the title ‘LAST DANCE’ and said, “it’s our last concert before the military, but ‘last’ doesn’t mean a thing. Because I believe that this is not our final ‘last.'” In addition, all members joined him in tears and said, “thank you. We will see you later.”
In the DVD and Blu-ray, each member’s individual performances and multi-angle videos, unit members’ performances, as well as unreleased making videos are included. Furthermore, the whole package includes a photo book, postcard set, calendar, and poster set as well.
The pre-sale will take place from April 17 3 P.M. to April 27th. They will release DVD’s for a regular sale starting on April 30th, and Blu-ray on May 18th.
BIGBANG member T.O.P gets accused of violating prohibition of double duty. He is currently fulfilling his military duties as a public service worker.
After BIGBANG members besides Seungri enlisted in the military, they released a song ‘Flower Road’ in gratitude for fan’s patience. However, some netizens are raising questions regarding the new single release.
According to regulations for social service staff management, you must first receive permission from the chief of the service agency in order to have an additional job. From then, the chief determines the final effect of the additional job, and either allows or rejects it.
The argument is that by earning the profit from ‘Flower Road,’ T.O.P is violating the prohibition of double duty.
However, there are some uncertainty in the argument.
The regulations do not express in detail regarding the double duty, and they are influenced largely by the chief’s decision. The most ambiguous part is that the recording for ‘Flower Road’ happened 2 years ago, when T.O.P was not serving his public duties yet.
In 2016, BIGBANG had mentioned the unreleased songs during their V live interview. During the interview, Taeyang said, “we have about two or three finished songs that we did not include in the album.” In response, Seungri said, “we want to release those songs in the future if we get a chance.”
‘Flower Road’ is one of the previously mentioned unreleased songs. Even before the controversy, YG had mentioned that the song was made two years ago during the production of ‘MADE’ album.
However, we must take a careful look at what they are doing regarding the profit from ‘Flower Road.’ The regulations are vague to the point T.O.P’s social agency, Yongsan-gu Office can’t provide an immediate answer. JYJ members Park Yoo-chun and Kim Jae-joong had also released a solo album while serving as a public worker and soldier. Other male celebrities had also published movies, dramas, or commercials they had previously filmed, during their military duties.
Because T.O.P is the only one being targeted regarding the violations of double duty, Seoul Regional Military Manpower Administration needs to clarify the regulations.
BIGBANG continues to walk the flower-strewn road of success even as they join the army.
On March 14, BIGBANG topped the real-time music charts for the groups newest song “Flower Road.” The digital single topped all of Korea’s major music streaming services including Melon, Bugs, Mnet, and Naver early on March 14, KST.
“Flower Road” is a song that reflects the sincere sentiments of the group’s five members who face a long break as they complete mandatory military service. Additionally, G-Dragon and T.O.P wrote the song, impressing many with their delicate and poetic emotional lyrics.
Meanwhile, the members of BIGBANG has steadily started their military conscription. Member T.O.P enlisted first in February of last year, followed by leader G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung. The three latter members all entered the army in the previous two weeks.
Furthermore, the youngest member Seungri will enlist after the promotion of his new Chinese film and solo album concludes.
