On Saturday evening, actress Son Tae-young attended the 2018 Melon Music Awards (MMA) at Gocheok SkyDome in Seoul. There, the starlet nabbed the Best Song of the Year award but also nabbed the attention of attendees and the media for a much different reason.
Pictures of her son and nephew seated in seats explicitly reserved for singers, actors, and entertainers sparked suspicion that they had gotten preferential treatment. Some speculated that the actress used her influence to secure some of the best seating in the house for her family.
However, the Son attempted to clarify the situation. The actress’ representative explained that with the ceremony taking place late at night, the actress decided to bring her son and nephew with her. More, to avoid inconveniencing other winners and presenters of the show, she also used a different waiting room for her family members.
Additionally, Son wanted them to see her receive the Best Song of the Year award. As such the two were able to temporarily occupy “The children only sat down (in the reserved seating) only during Son’s award and vacated the seats immediately (afterward),” the representative said.
Son eventually apologized for the incident, stressing that there was no special treatment. Nonetheless, the with under the suspicion of favoritism, what started as a misunderstanding turned into a controversy. Pictures and videos of the children in the reserved seating section spread quickly online, leading to widespread criticism. However, with a thorough explanation and a sincere apology, many believed that the difficult siutation will come to an end eventually.
