Girl group Momoland is expected to finally emerge from the cloud of alleged chart manipulation or “Sajaegi.”
The ministry of culture, sports, and tourism, which has been investigating allegations that Momoland and their agency have committed sajaegi, say that the investigation is coming to a close. Apparently, they have looked over data from Hanteo Chart and sales in Japan and have not found anything that conclusively proves foul-play. As such, the ministry commented that the investigation is likely to be completed unless new suspicions arise.
Earlier this year, Momoland was thrust into the spotlight when their third album GREAT with title song “BbomBbom” sold an incredible amount in one day. More than 8,200 records were sold on January 12 alone — a number that is more inline with prominent boy groups. As a result, the massive surge in sales and subsequent jump in charts led many to suspect purposeful chart manipulation.
Momoland’s agency, Duble Kick Company, refuted the allegations and asserted that the sales amount was due to international purchases. Additionally, the company revealed invoices from retailers in Japan and deposits sent from Japanese fan groups who bought in bulk. More, Double Kick Company stressed that sales were carried out under normal guidelines and appealed for unfair treatment.
Since Momoland released “BbomBbom,” the song has remained in the top 20 on music charts.
