A romantic Bildungsroman about a Korean exchange student is going to be produced as a romantic comedy series for Disney’s streaming platform.

According to media sources, a new book by The New York Times’ bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz is to be serialized on Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+.

“29 Dates” centers on Jisu Kim, a 16-year-old exchange student from Korea to the United States. The book follows her school life as well as her love life in her new private school in San Francisco.

The book depicts Jisu’s parents as typical representations of “Asian parents,” who impose academic pressure on their children. For their daughter’s success, Jisu’s parents move her daughter to a private school in San Francisco, to where they send guys from Seoul for matchmaking. The story unfolds as Jisu goes on dates, or seon – the Korean culture of matchmaking set by the elders of a household.

“29 Dates” by Melissa de la Cruz will be published on December 18. The production details are yet to be announced.
