Mnet’s Asian Music Awards (MAMA) is a major annual k-pop music award ceremony by CJ E&M through Mnet, their dedicated music channel. MAMA started in South Korea and was held in the peninsula country for seven years, but according to reports was not a success –though there are some doubts about this claim. It was due to this apparent failure that motivated CJ E&M to move the show outside of South Korea for the first time in 2010. Macau served  as the host city that year and in subsequent years the show would take place in Singapore and Hong Kong.

With the economic embargo on all forms of Korean entertainment Kpoplove delved into arising speculation that the award show may finally return to South Korea for the first time in almost a decade

However, on August 17 CJ E&M released a statement that put an end to the speculation. In the statement they revealed that the award show will take place  in two different cities, but no cities in South Korea were names. Osaka, Japan and Hong Kong have been  chosen as the host cities.

It is not clear if the award show will be held on the same day, November 29, or on different days.
