Hollywood’s interest in Ma Dong-seok has grown tremendously since last year’s “Train to Busan” was screened at the Cannes International Film Festival. Mr. Ma’s fantastic portrayal of a protective husband and father-to-be placed him on the radar of American film producers. After the international release of “Train to Busan” and its positive reception from audiences he has received calls from interested parties. Moreover, Mr. Ma apparently had meetings with Marvel Studio to discuss his possible role in “Avengers: Infinity War”, set for a 2018 release, in detail.

Mr. Ma opened up about the attention he has been receiving saying, ” After ‘Train to Busan’ the media would ask what I had planned next. I got calls for an American movie and show, too. However, I was working on ‘The Outlaws’ and ‘The Bros’ so the timing hasn’t been right. I think I will do it if the opportunity comes up again.”

In fact, discussions regarding Mr. Ma’s expansion have been in the works even before “Train to Busan”. Mr. Ma immigrated to the United States (U.S.) with his family when he was 18. While in the U.S. he went on to graduate from the Columbus State University with a degree in physical education. Further, due to his time and education in the U.S., Mr. Ma is fluent in English. This language ability coupled with his unique image have made him very marketable in the West. Mr. Ma already has a U.S. agent who is in charge of casting and receives proposals from interested parties.

Furthermore, Mr. Ma has become a go-to action star in the same vein as Sylvester Stallone, Dwayne Johnson, and Vin Diesel through his various roles. Additionally, his history as a boxer and personal trainer for mixed martial artists Mark Coleman and Kevin Randleman has also helped him gain attention.

As such, due to these different factors, Marvel Studios offered Ma Dong-seok a role in their upcoming film. Unfortunately, after careful consideration Mr. Ma decided to not take the offer. At the time he had already committed to a shooting schedule for a Korean film. Currently, Marvel Studios has finished casting for “Avenger: Infinity War”.

Marvel has grown to become a major representative Hollywood studio. They have had major productions that range from the animation to superhero genre. Since launching the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” (MCU) with the 2008 “Iron Man”, the studio has gone on to release 17 more movies. Furthermore, in the nine years since 2008 the studio has earned $5 billion domestically and an astronomical $13 billion worldwide. For Marvel Studio’s tenth anniversary the studio will expand the MCU with the launch of “Avengers: Infinity War” next year. Kim Soo-hyun, also known as Claudia Kim, starred in “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, making her the first Korean to star in the film franchise.
