Korea’s idol survival show “Produce 101” has teamed up with Japan’s very-own girl group AKB48 to bring “Produce 48”.

Japanese girl group AKB48 announced their participation in “Produce 48”, the third and upcoming season of Korean idol program “Produce 101” at NHK’s seventh annual “Kōhaku Uta Gassen” on Dec. 10.

“Produce 48” will combine the “Produce 101” system of voting on which members will debut and AKB48 producer Akimoto Yasushi’s  “idols you can meet” concept. The program will aim to produce a global girl group that will be active in both Korea and Japan.

During “Kōhaku Uta Gassen”, the AKB48 members announced that past members of AKB48 and other top stars are eligible to participate as trainees in the upcoming program. The program registration will run from Dec. 15 to Jan. 10. After AKB48’s own member audition ends on Jan. 1, members for “Produce 48” will be revealed.
