On June 6, GOT7 Yugyeom posted a message on his Instagram account informing fans that he joined the ice bucket challenge after being tagged by his friend Do-Kyeom. Further, he thanked his friend for the opportunity to participate and hopes that his “small support will help patients of Lous Gehrig’s disease (ALS) and their family. Thank you.”

The ice bucket challenge first went viral when former baseball player Pete Frates discovered he had ALS in 2011. A few years later in 2014, Frates challenged some of his friends and a few celebrities including NFL player Tom Brady to take on the ice bucket challenge.

The purpose of the challenge is not only to see famous people or friends dump a tub full of ice water on their heads, but also a means of awareness and charity. Each challenger helps to demystify and destigmatize the debilitating disease. Moreover, while the challenge is fun and different, many participants stressed that the focus of the campaign is to help others.

Should you feel inspired to help out the cause, there are multiple platforms online that allow you to donate. Furthermore, many can also donate directly to organizations in person or take on the challenge themselves.

On another note, other K-pop stars who have done the ice bucket challenge this year include VIXX’s N and Seventeen’s DK.
